Old Globule News

28th February 2006: We released version 1.3.1 of Globule. This version introduces quite a number of new features: Download this improved version from the regular download pages, and do not forget to read the documentation!
24th October 2005: Today is a big day for us: we are using Globule to host the Web site of the new version of the Minix operating system!

This is the biggest deployment of Globule to date. So far, our servers are doing fine, but we expect to be watching the system control panels for the whole day to be there if anything goes wrong...

Note: the version we are using for this is the upcoming version 1.3.1. Being asked to host this site was a great exercise for us: it forced us to look into the many small details that make the difference between a cool research prototype and a real usable product. So, expect version 1.3.1 to be better than any previous release we made!

20th May 2005: The Globule team is proud to announce the release of Globule version 1.3.0. You are most welcome to download it. Among the new features, you will find:
  • A monitoring interface will give you more insight at what's going on inside your servers.
  • Basic support for replicated PHP pages. Note that databases potentially accessed by the code cannot be replicated at the moment (read this paper to learn how we plan to replicate the databases in the future).
  • Easier procedure to upgrade Globule versions. Servers running Globule-1.3.0 and up will also be able to interoperate even if they do not run the same versions.
  • A completely rewritten user documentation.
  • A website where you can register your server(s), and find other servers where to host your contents. Based on these informations, the site will automatically generate configuration files for you.
This release should be considered Beta quality which will undergo some more testing and documentation.
7th february 2005: Michal Szymaniak's paper on Latency-Based Replica Placement received the best paper award at the IEEE SAINT 2005 Symposium.
2nd february 2005: In the past months we have been working on the upcoming version 1.3.0. We still have to test it seriously before releasing it, but here are the brand-new features that you can expect:
  • A website where you can register your server(s), and find other servers where to host your contents. Based on these informations, the site will automatically generate configuration files for you.
(although it is not finished yet, you can have a look at the current draft).
18th november 2004: Globule-1.2.3 is released. It fixes several important bugs relating to cache invalidations, non-replicated parts of replicated sites, deleted documents, and origin servers with no replica. Check out the ChangeLog and release notes for more information.
4th november 2004: Globule-1.2.2 is released. It fixes several important bugs and makes this new version the most stable Globule version to date. Check out the ChangeLog and release notes for more information.
11th October 2004: Globule is registered at Sourceforge and Freshmeat.
4th October 2004: Globule-1.2.1 is a bug-fix release. Check out the ChangeLog and release notes for more information.
28th September 2004: The Globule team will present a poster at the SANE conference on September 30th and October 1st. You are welcome to read our poster and come visit us at the conference!
13th September 2004: We are proud to announce the availability of Globule-1.2.0! Among all great new features, note that it allows continuous operations while a master server is down, it supports virtual servers and DNS redirection, it now has a version for Windows, and much much more. Check out the release notes for more information.
13th September 2004: Students from the Vrije Universiteit are invited to participate to the Globule Contest 2004: help us debug Globule and invent great new features and win fantastic prices!
24th May 2004: Globule-1.1.2 had a nasty bug, which is corrected in version 1.1.3 (see the ChangeLog for a full list of updates).
21st April 2004: Another bug-fix release: 1.1.2 (read the ChangeLog)
21st April 2004: Globule in a keychain
20th April 2004: Version 1.1.0 had a few serious bugs, we released version 1.1.1 to fix them.
16th April 2004: We released version 1.1.0 of Globule, which contains many important improvements:
  • Fault-Tolerance: Each Globule server periodically checks the availability of the sites holding its replicas. In case one replica site is down or misconfigured, it will stop redirecting client requests to this replica until it has recovered.
  • Dynamic adaptation of replication policies: instead of selecting replication policies once and for all, Globule automatically selects the best-performing replication strategy for each document. It periodically re-evaluates its choices, to account for potential changes in access patterns.
  • Monitoring: Globule now allows administrators to better monitor the behavior of their system. First, access logs to all replicas will be transfered back to the master site. Second, Globule can attach each delivered document with information on how this request was treated.
  • New replication policy: we added the Alex replication policy.
  • Bug fixes: plenty of them (see the ChangeLog)...
6th April 2004: I added a list of pages known to be hosted by Globule.
19th February 2004: We are very proud to announce the first public release of Globule! Check it here...
19th January 2004: That's it, we believe our prototype is robust enough! The page you are currently reading has been delivered by Globule software. We have four replicas: www.globule.org, slave1.globule.org and slave2.globule.org. Another page known to be replicated by Globule is Maarten's home page. Client redirection is currently done via HTTP, so by looking at the URL in your browser you will know which replica you are accessing. Hit the reload button and see what happens! We are almost ready to publish Globule software...
14th January 2004: A number of master's term projects are proposed.
28th November 2003: Added informations about the Globule meetings and a list of selected papers.
8th July 2003: Netairt-0.2 has been released!
